General Information regarding transcription of interviews
OutSec employs 3 different types of standard interview transcription:
a) Verbatim
Everything is included in the transcript. This is a totally 100% accurate record of the submitted
soundfile, down to all the 'ums, aahs, ohs, and sorries'. No abbreviations or alterations are allowed.
Queries or unclear diction are typed in red within the text along with the recorded dictation elapsed time.
This style of report would normally be requested for:
- witness statements
- universities research projects
- medical research notes
- speeches
b) Intelligent Verbatim
A degree of discretion is applied by the typist. A common-sense approach will eliminate words not relevant
to the subject matter. English is improved so abbreviations are changed to full grammar. This is a less
expensive option to the above. Queries are still typed in red alongside the elapsed time of the sound file.
This style of report would normally be requested for:
- journalist articles
- lecture notes
- reports
- conferences
- board meetings
- recruitment interviews
- telephone interviews
c) Intelligent
The typist has full discretion to edit and proof the transcribed work. The completed document will contain a
readable summary of the subject matter. This report may be used as the reference for another article or project.
This style of report would normally be requested for:
- speeches
- conferences
- telephone interviews
- general transcripts
Costs
The time taken to transcribe multiple-voice sound files and interviews is dependent on a number of variables including
number of voices, quality of recording, clarity and accent and type of transcript required (as detailed above).
Work will normally be assessed and an indicative cost given to the client.
The standard transcription rate is £18/hr, charged on a per-minute usage basis. Most interviews will take between 4 and 8 times the original length of the length of the sound file to transcribe and check. Multiple voice conference work can be 6 to 10 times the original length of the sound file recording.
Work should be submitted in a .wav or .dss sound file format, direct to your own page on OutSec FileManager. If the sound files are of studio-quality and very large (more than 64kb) check to see if they can be converted into mp3 format before upload. If this is not possible it may be necessary to burn the recordings onto CD and send them to OutSec although being subject to the postal system will delay the transcription process. Check first if they can be reduced to a more manageable size or format (such as mp3) which would still allow upload to your page on FileManager.
