The Winds of Change
The winds of change and the sands of time are shifting as we speak. We are all held in the moment each caught like a rabbit in the headlights. But we must focus and consider the words of Alexander Graham Bell and act today for tomorrow is fast approaching. As he so famously wrote:
‘When one door closes, another opens; but we often look so long and so regretfully upon the closed door that we do not see the one which has opened for us.’
Time Slipping Away
The winds of change over the last three months have battered the whole world. The landscape has been decimated, literally. And this has divided nations. However it has also given people the time and opportunity to reconsider their lives. It’s as if we are in a gear change, some still in reverse, others, neutral but some are already embracing the opportunities that are available. Post Covid will be a a bright new world to grow and develop in. Post the Second World War, when everyone was in despair, new opportunities arose. Doors closed but more opened. The same is happening as we speak.
The winds of change are here but the landscape is very different to 1945. Back then there was no mobile phone, no internet, no opportunity to move your business online. We saw such a massive change with the arrival of the internet. Opportunities flourished. In fact OutSec is an example of that change; an opportunity that created jobs whilst also providing alternative working methods and economies. And so too will we once again re-examine the landscape and the opportunities that will arise out of our changing landscape.
Motivation, determination and a will to succeed is all that is needed. Check yourself out on The Self Motivation Quiz. More and more companies are looking to the individual and no longer the degree. They have realised that the power to succeed lies within the person and not in their qualifications. Harness that power and YOU WILL SUCCEED. Be resourceful but start focussing now as golden opportunities are there for the harvesting; just read some of the stories below which illustrate the need to act now and not allow doors to slam shut.
Changing Direction offers new Opportunities
My friend owned a café, my other friend, a select clothes boutique and the other a small discreet bookshop. The latter felt obscure books may again become popular and, whilst he ‘considered vinyl’ he had also cornered off part of the bookshop to be an attractive ‘Sit, Read & Indulge’ café. Truly inspirational and the popularity by which it was growing was an accolade to what many considered as him going against the tide of progress.
In Wiki it states: Progress is the movement towards a refined, improved, or otherwise desired state. In the context of progressivism, it refers to the proposition that advancements in technology, science, and social organization have resulted, and by extension will continue to result, in an improved human condition; the latter may happen as a result of direct human action, as in social enterprise or through activism, or as a natural part of sociocultural evolution.
So ask yourself: what does progress mean to me? What have I gained from my life, and in particular, the Covid-19 time experience that will shape my future. Question yourself and if, having done that, you still have not come to a conclusion, think deeper down to the depths of your soul. For now is the time to Act, to Create Your Future. Better still set yourself A Goal and a Timeframe for its achievement.
All of my friends have achieved a personal goal. They did what they set out to do but an ‘infectious agent’, about 20 to 400 nanometres in diameter destroyed their livelihoods, their future, their ‘here and now’. This miniscule agent has gone out to destroy the globe and has turned life, as we know it, literally upside down. A pandemic has seen the death of countless human beings, and will continue to ricochet over the coming years. Families stripped of their income may never recover. Mental illness, domestic abuse, crime, are all about to explode BUT innate humanity will recover. The winds of change have been seen throughout history, catastrophes have hit hard across all continents but as a species humans continue to show strength in adversity, defiance in the face of cruelty and courage to stand up and be counted. And that is what my friends have done but I have learned more about them than I knew before. I have seen in them the true signs of entrepreneurialism and the will to succeed:
Keep Thinking Ahead!
My friend who owned a café, already having an internet presence, has expanded her menu to include cordon bleu meals for one, two, or four people. Not only that but she has kept her original staff of two and has now increased it two-fold, for deliveries, bike and van driving and is planning to expand via market food openings, once the virus has been curtailed. She is also turning her café into a family home offering BnB. As you will see she has not been idle!
A Man’s Best Friend!
My second friend, again with an internet presence, has already sold her stock at cost, painted the front shop face, designed her new logo, developed her website and is looking forward to providing Pamper Pooch Services to the local posh dog owners in the area. She worked out that retail is out for the next year, when you bear in mind you need to order your winter stock now and your spring stock in the autumn. It is too precarious. She also views the Pamper Pooch as an enterprise that, whilst not her passion, something that will be more stable and that, should retail come back, she will be ideally placed to either return to her original business and/or sell the Pamper Pooch business; she reckons she is playing safe and I for one think this is a sound business plan. Again no idleness there!
My third, the book-lover, aptly bespectacled and articulate, is doing a copy-editing and proof reading course. He has identified that these skills do still have a future and that in fact his projections tell him that with far less overheads and the ability to do both of these professions from home he will in fact have more income than before. The additional time when he, BC (before Covid), had commuted, did stock takes, manage accounts and all the add-ons that running your own business entails means that he will in fact earn more whilst being less stressed. In addition he is already looking for a puppy a long-term project that he had decided was for his retirement rather than at the tender age of 45! Unfortunately, he lives no-where near my Pamper Pooch friend …!
The Future is Yours
So now is the time for everyone to think Smart and Make Your Future. Ditch your road map and go off-piste and consider your skills. We all have them; we just may not have realised it as yet. Talk to your friends, see if they have ideas; re-focus and be positive. Manipulate the winds of change to the direction you want to go in and gather speed before the sands of time run out.
Meanwhile keep well & safe.
